What is ribbon mixer and how it works ?
The working principle of a ribbon mixer (or ribbon blender) is based on a triple-action mixing mechanism which consist of Axial movement, Radial movement, Tangential movement, that ensures fast, uniform, and gentle blending of powders, granules, and other bulk materials inside a U-shaped trough.
Basic Construction construction of ribbon blender involves following
U-shaped horizontal trough — holds the material to be mixed. Double helical ribbon agitator — mounted on a central shaft. Outer ribbon that moves material in one direction (usually from ends → center). Inner ribbon that moves material in the opposite direction (center → ends). Drive unit — motor and gearbox to rotate the agitator.Discharge valve — for emptying the mixed material. End seals — to prevent leakage of fine powders. Control panel with full automation of mixer machine.
Optionally, it can have:
Jacketed trough (for heating or cooling), Liquid spray system
Working Principle of Ribbon Mixer Machine.
When the agitator rotates, the inner and outer ribbons move material in opposite axial directions while simultaneously lifting and tumbling it radially.
This creates three-dimensional mixing:
Type 1) Axial movement
Outer ribbon moves material from ends → center; inner ribbon moves from center → ends. Ensures thorough distribution across the length of the mixer.
Type 2) Radial movement
Material near the trough bottom is lifted upward while top layers move downward. Promotes top-to-bottom uniformity. |
Type 3) Tangential movement
Continuous circular motion around the shaft. Maintains constant circulation.
The combination of these movements blends the ingredients quickly and uniformly — typically within 5 to 15 minutes, depending on material type.
3) What are Key Process Parameters for operating Ribbon Mixer machine ?
Filling level:- 40–70% of total volume for optimal mixing.
Ribbon RPM:-20 to 40 RPM (varies by material).
Mixing time:- Depend upon type of material and size of mixer machine. But generally 5–15 minutes for dry powders; longer for cohesive or damp mixes. Power requirement depends on batch weight and bulk density — higher for heavy (refractory) materials.
Discharge time: Depends upon material type and volume and size of mixer. |
